About Tinajas!
These stone planters are from Chihuahua, Mexico, where they are known as "tinajas" (pronounced tee-nah-hahs). They are individually crafted by four families from the Frontera Region. Native rock is quarried from volcanic tuff outcrops and brought back to their small ranchitos, where it is carved by hand. Harvested by these primitive methods, each stone becomes a tinaja with its own unique shape and character. Naturally porous, they make beautiful, functional planters.

Chepe making tinajas Tinajas are beautiful in outdoor settings, as well as in sunrooms and greenhouses. Due to the porous nature of the stone, tinajas used  indoors on wood or carpet flooring need to be placed on a waterproof barrier. These beautiful planters only improve with age; as water drains through the stone, residues from the water and soil darken and lend a rustic look to the surface. In most climates, lichens and mosses will also adhere to the stone.

Plants love the insulation provided in winter, and the cooling evaporative quality of the stone in the summer. Though the stone does absorb water, freezing and subsequent breakage common with other planters has not been a problem. It is recommended, however, that fountains made with tinajas be drained before exposure to sub-freezing temperature. The nature of the volcanic tuff these planters are crafted from eliminates the need for drainage holes.

In addition to these beautiful planters, the local artisans craft garden statuettes, fountains, birdbaths, benches, and other special garden pieces. These original creations are one-of-a-kind and can be special ordered.
